Introduction. Anaerobic digestion converted cheese whey, a liquid waste of the dairy industry, into methane gas. Evangelista's objective was to solve problems with the bioreactor's membrane recycle system.

 

Membrane Bioreactor. Evangelista provided technical support to the Dorr-Oliver's Membrane Anaerobic Reactor System (MARS)---the first company to develop anaerobic membrane bioreactors. Evangelista selected ultrafiltration membranes to increase microbial retention and developed membrane cleaning regimes to decrease membrane fouling. Evangelista also designed a pump system that was the least damaging to the anaerobic microorganisms within the membrane bioreactor. Project was for a private client
