MICROFILTRATION with POWDERED ACTIVATED CARBON

Introduction. Toxic soil inside a capped slurry wall accumulated noxious aqueous leachate that leaked into the environment. The objective was to explore several on-site innovative treatment technologies as an alternative to the transportation and off-site treatment of leachate.

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) with Microfiltration. Evangelista ran a pilot-scale PAC system to treat leachate contaminants, which appeared promising; however, microfiltration membranes plugged during PAC removal from the treated leachate. Therefore, this technology was eliminated from consideration for leachate treatment.

More Information. Project Status Presentation to Region II for Pollution Abatement Services Site, Oswego, NY. R. Evangelista. Prepared for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
