Course Description. This course includes a study of: the US Department of Transportation (DOT) hazardous materials transportation, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication (HazCom), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) Title III Community Right-To-Know, Underground Storage Tanks (UST), Asbestos, Proposition 65 (Prop 65), Air Toxics, and Medical and Infectious Waste regulations and requirements. The laboratory consists of supplemental lectures, audio-visual materials, field trips, and the applications of the regulations. Formerly called Hazardous Materials Management Applications.

Course Objectives. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • Properly ship hazardous materials
  • Identify the major requirements of the OSHA Hazard Communication standard
  • List the major requirements of the SARA Title III Community Right-to-Know standard
  • Analyze a given underground storage tank or asbestos issues, identify the applicable regulations, and develop a cost effective plan for contamination remediation
  • Identify the major requirements of the federal and State of California transportation regulations as applied to hazardous materials
  • Recall and summarize federal and local asbestos and underground storage tank regulations and understand proper asbestos and underground storage tank management techniques
  • Recapitulate the major differences between federal and California toxic air regulations
  • Understand the Proposition 65 requirements, employee responsibilities, compliance strategies, and sources of information
  • Identify proper management requirements for medical and infectious wastes
