Introduction. Toxic soil inside a capped slurry wall accumulated noxious aqueous leachate that leaked into the environment. The objective was to explore several on-site innovative treatment technologies as an alternative to the transportation and off-site treatment of leachate.
Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) with Microfiltration. Evangelista ran a pilot-scale PAC system to treat leachate contaminants, which appeared promising; however, microfiltration membranes plugged during PAC removal from the treated leachate. Therefore, this technology was eliminated from consideration for leachate treatment.
