Introduction. The purpose was to conduct an environmental data review of an Air Force base, develop a hazardous waste site selection process, select a site for the implementation of a pilot-scale in-situ steam-injection remediation system, and complete the conceptual design of the steam-injection system.
Site Selection. The primary site selection criteria were a contaminant range between 10 and 1000 parts per million, and a specific soil permeability beneath the contamination zone. Secondary selection criteria were defined contamination perimeter, relative site size, site accessibility, distribution of contaminants, and proximity to a water treatment plant pipeline.
Steam Injection. Although the design may vary between sites, the conceptual design consists of injection wells, vapor/liquid extraction wells, and condensate extraction wells. Liquids and condensate are treated at the base’s water treatment plant and vapors are treated on site.
