Introduction. Toxic soil inside a capped slurry wall accumulated noxious aqueous leachate that leaked into the surrounding area endangering human health and the environment. The objective was to explore several on-site innoivative treatment technologies as an alternative to off-site treatment and disposal.
Pretreatment System. Evangelista created an on-site pretreatment system using: chemical precipitation to remove fouling agents, flocculation to agglomerate the small precipitate particles into a large "floc," lamella clarification to settle the floc, and sequential filtration to polish the leachate. The pretreatment results were a dramatic success.
