Introduction. Chemical Commodities, Inc., located in a residential neighborhood, had soil and runaway groundwater containing toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Low Temperature Thermal Treatment (LT3). Evangelista explored the feasibility of Low Temperature Thermal Treatment that used oven-like temperatures to heat and evaporate soil-bound VOCs for incineration in an afterchamber. The major challenge for LT3 was the nearly impermeable, highly plastic, clayey soil. In the pilot-scale LT3, toxic soil was pushed through a heated chamber by a screw auger where 91% of the VOCs were driven from the treated soil.
