Introduction. The objective of this project was to determine the extent of mercury contamination inside a
34,000 sq ft military instrumentation building and to develop remedial techniques to remove that mercury.
Operations. Evangelista:
- established sampling, analysis, and quality assurance/quality controls goals and methods
- researched the site background
- enacted decontamination procedures
- described planned activities in a Sampling and Analytical Plan and a Health and Safety Plan
- performed a physical and chemical hazards evaluation
- established personal protection via monitoring oxygen, explosivity, radiation, mercury, and volatile organic compounds
- evaluated building components to establish the extent of mercury contamination
- carried out treatability tests to determine the feasibility of mercury decontamination
